In an intense match, Williams won 6-3, 6-7, 6-2, and claimed the 20th Grand Slam title of her career. In this photo, Williams passionately reacts to a turn of events with her match with Safarova. Facing the direction of the camera, she lets out a scream, her eyes clenched shut, neck muscles tensed and mouth wide open. Williams has just won the point in question.

Born in 1981, Serena Williams is an American tennis player who has been ranked No. 1 by the Women’s Tennis Association eight times between the year she first claimed the title, 2002, and 2017. In 2016 she was the reigning champion of the French Open, Wimbledon and the Olympics women’ singles and doubles. During what is called ‘the Open Era’ — the period post-1968 when professional tennis players were allowed to compete — she has won a singles Grand Slam tennis tournament. more than any other player: 23 times.

There are debates as to whether Williams is the ‘all time greatest’ or ‘greatest of all time’, but either way her mastery of the sport is without question.

As is typical in the corporatized sporting world, this tremendous skill is mixed with massive amounts of money and big-brand advertising. Williams has received over US$90 million in prize money alone, and in 2004 she signed a deal with Nike to the amount of US$40 million. She has since launched her own fashion label, a collection of hand-bags and jewellery sold over the Home Shopping Network. In 2010 she became a certified ‘nail technician’ to go with her new collection by the company HairTech.
